In January 2019, a start-up, CARICO Cafe Connoisseur was the first company to pioneer the use of Blockchain technology to show the how and where and what of a batch of coffee. For the first time, this connected consumers to the origin of their coffee. The cryptocurrency / bitcoin theory turned into value for both consumers and ‘producers’. In this case, 80% of the world’s coffee is grown by 25 million smallholder farmers around the world who are driven to quality and yield to increase their household income.

Did you know that for your average coffee, about 10 grams of roasted coffee is used. Assuming zero spill anywhere along the chain, this is from 11 grams of green bean which is roasted, which is from almost 15 grams of dried coffee which is from 72 to 87 grams of the harvested coffee fruit? For your monthly coffee (one drink on 25 days), a smallholder farmer has picked around 2 kilograms of coffee! The current advice is that larger harvest (yield), better harvest and processing (quality), earn from something else (alternatives), reduce over-population (spread wealth), .
